Catagnana is a
rural hamlet near the ancient walled town of Barga in Tuscany. The village is
peaceful and unspoilt, with buildings dating back to the eighteenth century. It
has majestic views over the Serchio Valley and is a convenient starting point
for hillside and forest walks to the surrounding villages.
Barga can be reached in five minutes by car and 30 minutes on foot. It is a lively,
cosmopolitan town with a wide variety of cafes, restaurants, shops and services.
The town is the cultural hub of the surrounding area, with an opera house, a
jazz festival, and a number of outdoor feasts, dances and concerts. There is
also a modern, well-run open-air swimming pool, which has a bar and cafe,
comfortable deck chairs and a beautiful view. The Old Town which dates back to
medieval times, is a honeycomb of winding, cobbled alleys and stairways, leading
up to a beautiful Cathedral.
Barga is on the edge of the mountainous Garfagnana area. Lucca, Pisa, Florence Siena and the seaside are all within easy reach. There is a train station in the nearby town of Fornaci di Barga. Services are cheap and regular and connect with all the major towns and cities in the region.
The house is typical of the region and is believed to be more than 150 years old. It has been entirely renovated and redecorated, with traditional features largely retained. It is situated at the front of the village and forms part of a block with two other similar houses. Its position offers spectacular and uninterrupted views of the valley.
